Want to become independent?
Hello everyone, Today we are going to share life hacks on how to become or living independently without parents or family.
Let’s start reading.
Moving away from family and home can be daunting for young students looking to pursue further studies. If you too are on that path, thoughts about being in a new place amid strangers and possibly a vastly different culture and lifestyle than you are used to may make you nervous and excited in equal parts.
Certain life-altering decisions need to be made keeping the long term in mind. If relocating to a new place offers you what you have been looking for, then you should welcome the opportunity with open arms and make the move.
That would, however, also mean living independently. And if you have never done so before, it is likely to make you anxious.
It isn’t easy to suddenly take charge of each and every aspect of your life. You may find it difficult to juggle your studies and life on your own, at least initially.
Since you will be staying away from your parents for the next 3 to 4 years, it makes sense to prepare yourself to face life independently. Wondering how you’re going to manage that? Here are a few tips to get you started.
Tips For For Living Independently
Follow this 7 tips for living independently for as long as possible. We hope this article will teach you how to start living independently.
Learn How to Cook
There’s no need to cringe at the thought of learning to cook. It might not be easy but it isn’t a huge task either. You don’t need to become a culinary master, only acquaint yourself with the basics.
Sure there will be times when it will be hard resisting the temptation of dialing a pizza at 10 in the night or quickly whipping up a bowl of instant noodles because you are feeling too lazy to cook anything else. But consuming junk on an everyday basis is not an option.
Buying and cooking fresh vegetables is much healthier and cost-effective. Eating fruits and greens will keep you fit and active. You will be able to focus better on your studies, sports and other extra-curricular activities. Scout the Internet for various kinds of recipes, short and elaborate, cook fresh food, and keep yourself healthy. Your mom’s going to be so proud of you!
Learn about Hygiene
Learn to use the washing machine, the vacuum cleaner and even the dishwasher before you leave home. You need to know how to operate all these machines to keep your room neat and clean, wear clean clothes and cook in sparkling pots and pans. You need to ensure that you continue to stay in hygienic conditions.
You might also want to devote some time to learning about products like detergents, fabric softeners, air fresheners, washing liquids, anti-bacterial toilet cleaners etc. which will help you keep your student dwelling up to standard. Ask your mom about the brands she uses and trusts and put them down on your shopping list before you take off.
Start Looking for Jobs
If you’re anticipating a tough financial situation, don’t want your education fees to become a burden on your parents, or want to work towards paying off your student loan you might want to start looking for a part-time job in advance.
Finding the right kind of job that also pays well takes time, but it’s more than worth the effort. Having a job will not only make you financially independent, it will also be a productive use of your time.
You main priority, of course, should continue to be your education; the job should only play a supporting role.
Open a Bank Account
Since you will be earning as well as managing your money, it makes sense to open a bank account to keep it safe and secure. Don’t keep cash at home, nor carry a lot of it with you in your wallet or purse.
You risk losing it/getting robbed. Depositing your money in the bank will not only keep it safe but also earn you interest on it.
Having a bank account will teach you about budgeting and handling finances on your own. You will also understand how monetary transactions take place. You might also want to think of getting yourself a credit/debit card to be able to make payments easily as well as keep track of them.
Learn to Use Public Transport
You may be a licensed driver who’s pretty adept at driving his father’s car around the block, but you need to learn to use public transport since daddy’s car isn’t going to be around at the university. Getting around on your own is going to take some practice so it is advisable to start using public transport beforehand.
Besides learning to travel in buses and trains, you should also learn how to pump gas and make necessary purchases for transportation in case you plan to rent/get a secondhand vehicle. It would also help if you read up about necessary items to be kept in your car, getting insurance, and what to do in case of an accident.
Start Taking Responsibility For Living Independently
It would help you if you started assuming responsibilities at home as the first step towards becoming self-reliant. You could begin by running small errands, going to the grocery store, doing the laundry and the dishes, helping out in the kitchen, and so on. Slowly and steadily, you can start doing complex tasks as well.
Taking on responsibility will not only make you independent, it will also teach you how to think like an adult and be prepared for the real world.
Note Down Emergency Numbers
Make a list of all the emergency numbers – names and numbers of reliable people who live around you – and keep it handy at all times.
Since your parents aren’t going to be around, your roommate or a close friend at the university could be your 2 a.m. go-to person. Also find out about the hospitals/doctors closest to your place in case you need their services in an emergency.
Being independent is essentially about looking after yourself in the best way possible, without losing touch with your family and friends. While you enjoy your freedom, do make sure that you don’t get carried away or misuse it, and you’ll do just fine.
